Atarino A. Helieisar Title: Chief Law Librarian and Publications Manager for the FSM Supreme Court/ President of the FSM Association of Libraries, Archives, and Museums (FSM-ALAM) Topic: "Connecting Teachers/Librarians With Our Micronesian Student Population" Mr. Atarino A. Helieisar, is the Chief Law Librarian and Publication Manager of the Supreme Court of the Federated States of Micronesia, and is responsible for overseeing the operations of its four library locations in the FSM island states of Pohnpei, Chuuk, Yap, and Kosrae. In this capacity, he ensures that the FSM Supreme Court Law Libraries provide current and comprehensive legal reference and information services to the judiciary, bar members, and the public throughout the four FSM states. Proficient in the languages of Chuukese and Pohnpeian, Mr. Helieisar received his education in education and business at the College of Micronesia, and served as Coordinator of U.S. government documents, UN Documents and FAO Collections at the College of Micronesia-FSM Resources Learning Center for 7 years prior to accepting his current position at the Supreme Court library in 2007. Throughout his career as a librarian, he has been an active member of IFLA, ALA, PARBICA, the Pacific Islands Association of Libraries, Archives and Museums (PIALA) and numerous other library associations, enthusiastically participating in regional and international meetings, often serving as an official delegate and presenter. Mr. Helieisar, is also wearing many hats aside from his real job. After being the President of PIALA for almost 8 years, He stepped down and become the President of the Federated States of Micronesia Association of Libraries, Archives, and Museums (FSM-ALAM) after reviving the association in 2018 until today. Mr. Helieisar, is also the Journal Clerk of the 4th Constitutional Convention of the Federated States of Micronesia which was started in January, 2020 and will be ended in March, 2020. Dr. Clare Camacho Ph.DTitle: Retired Teacher Topic: "A Girl Named Dot: Lessons for Our Changing Times" Clare is a retired teacher from the University of Guam and a wanna-be librarian. Although she is retired, Clare is not yet tired, so she dabbles in grant writing, speech-language therapy, and other related educational activities. This helps to keep her brain active and her wallet padded. Dr. Monique Storie Ph.DTitle: Dean, University Libraries Topic: "What Can a School Librarian Learn From a Patron's Tattoo? How to Make Reader's Advisory Work for You" Monique Carriveau Storie, Dean of the University Libraries, has worked at the University of Guam since 1995. Over the last 25 years, she has served as a reference and technical services librarian at the Richard Flores Taitano Micronesian Area Research Center and taught classes on Children’s Literature/Young Adult Literature for the School of Education. Her research has focused on emergence of Pacific Island’s children’s literature and the characteristics of CHamoru literature for youth. Diana BrennanTitle: Guam Public Library Program Coordinator Topic: "Guam Public Library System" Jason SolivaTitle: IT Consultant - Education Technology Topic: "Jumpstart Technology Engagement with Promethean" A B.S. Computer Science graduate at UOG, Jason Soliva joined Dimension Systems in 2012 as the project coordinator on implementing GDOE with Interactive Whiteboard education technology for all GDOE public schools. In 2014, Jason was certified under Promethean as an Education Teaching and Learning Consultant for Guam. With this, he has been one of the lead Promethean trainers leading instruction for teachers throughout public, private and college campuses on utilizing Promethean and education technology in the classrooms and as well as multiple businesses throughout the island of Guam. Kisha Borja-Quichocho-CalvoTitle: Instructor, University of Guam Topic: "Writing the Waves of Our Ocean" Kisha Borja-Quichocho-Calvo is from the village of Mangilao. She is a teacher, student, mother, and writer. She has taught Language Arts courses in the GDOE as well as English (research writing), Education, and CHamoru Studies courses at the University of Guam (UOG). She is currently an instructor of English and CHamoru Studies at the UOG. Kisha is also a PhD candidate in the Political Science program (with a specialization in Indigenous Politics) at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Her poetry and academic work are grounded in the CHamoru culture and history and are connected to CHamoru issues (such as CHamoru identity and education). Her work has been published in the Indigenous Literatures of Micronesia anthology, Effigies III, Storyboard, the Micronesian Educator, and The Relational Self — Decolonising Personhood in the Pacific. |
Professor Carmen SantosTitle: Reference Librarian, Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Library, University of Guam
Topic: "Collaboration & Collection Development Reflecting the Needs of Today's Learner" Carmen is a retired GDOE teacher. She worked for the department for 33 years as a secondary instructor of Social studies. She now works as an assistant professor, reference librarian at the RFK Memorial Library, University of Guam. Carmen's main tasks are to assist students in locating resources, respond to individual queries, and teach information literacy. She provides library instruction for students taking the online EN111 classes, so her information literacy course is online as well. When she is not at the reference desk, she engages in research, works on collection development, and does original cataloging. Joe QuinataTitle: Chief Program Coordinator Topic: Appreciative Inquiry: A Planning Method for Leading Change and Transformation Joe Quinata is currently the Chief Program Officer of the Guam Preservation Trust and is a Founding and Board Member of the Asian and Pacific Islanders American in Historic Preservation (APIAHiP) and an Advisory Member to the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP). His community contributions include the Chairman and Founding Member of the Humatak Community Foundation, Board Member of the Inafa’Maolek Mediation Center, and Executive Council Member of the National History Day, Inc. Joe Quinata received the 2011 NTHP Trustee’s Award for Organizational Excellence for his administration of the Guam Preservation Trust. He was cited an Honorary Architect from the American Institute of Architects, Guam and Micronesia Chapter and a recipient of the Pioneer in Preservation Award honored by APIAHiP. Dr. Bob BarberTitle: Professor/Extension Specialist Agriculture Economics and Sustainable Agriculture Topic: "Free Online Resources in Agriculture: Helping Teachers Inspire the Next Generation to Grow Fruits and Vegetables for Increased Food Security" Bob Barber is with UOG’s Cooperative Extension & Outreach he is an Extension Specialist/Professor in Agriculture Economics and Sustainable Agriculture. He teaches Farm and Agricultural Marketing, also Personal and Family Finance. He is the advisor to the Farmer’s Cooperative Association of Guam, and the Northern and Southern Soil and Water Conservation Districts. He coordinates the New and Veteran Farmer’s programs and the Guam Sustainable Agriculture Professional Development Program. He also works with in community wellness education currently implementing the 6 village Walk to Wellness Program working with the Non Communicable Disease Consortium through the Physical Activity group. Current interest include using organic, agroforestry and permaculture practices to develop low input subsistence farms for limited resource farmers. Kat BarnettTitle: Certified Yoga Teacher Topic: "Yoga for Mindfulness Mindful movement, slow and intentional, with mindful breath, deep and full to invite a pause. In this mindfulness yoga practice, in whatever the task at hand may be, the practitioner learns tools and techniques to respond rather than mindlessly react. Moments of pause become a powerful method to practice compassion, tolerance and kindness in any situation. Kat Barnett has been teaching and leading yoga classes at various locations on Guam for the past 6 years, learning and sharing as she grows.
